British businesses are losing the equivalent of £8.4 billion per year as a result of their staff taking cigarette breaks. A recent survey held by the British Heart Foundation has revealed that the typical smoker in our workplaces will spend over 4 minutes of each hour on a smoking break. That’s over 30 mins each, during a typical 8-hour work day!
British businesses are losing the equivalent of £8.4 billion per year as a result of this unhealthy habit. That breaks down to a staggering £1,815 per year for each full-time employee. Workplaces around the UK are now waking up to the fact that not only are their employees harming their health with each cigarette, but they are also destroying a sizeable chunk of the company budget.
The same survey also revealed that the typical smoker will take 70% more sick days in comparison to those who did not use cigarettes. This will cost the affected business around £50 per smoker for each year they are in employment. To put this figure in real time perspective, we are talking in the region of a whopping £288 million per annum. And when you add this to the even more impressive £8.4 billion already stacked up for the smoking breaks, it really does raise rather a few serious issues.
This really brings to light the importance of employers needing to step in and help their employees put the cigarette out. As the extremely dangerous habit is affecting the health of the employee and also the health of the business. A non-smoking employee is a lot more profitable than a smoker!
Vaping in the workplace may be a long way off, but starting to kick the habit now can lead to great financial savings for both you and your employer. With electronic cigarettes helping you save money and also more importantly your health!
