Is 'vaping' the buzzword of 2014?

Vaping has become a subculture in its own right, with many favouring it as a hobby as well as a method to quit smoking. Its popularity has risen substantially over the last few months, with many smokers abandoning cigarettes completely in favour of vaping. The term comes from the vapour released in e-cigarettes which have recently been used as a nicotine substitute for smokers around the world. The e-cigarette contains a small percentage of nicotine in order to help smokers quit their habit but there are also e-cigarettes which are flavoured and nicotine free. So could vaping be a thing of the future or is it likely to become obsolete? And will ‘vaping’ be the go-to word of 2014?

Vaping is fast becoming more socially acceptable. Many pubs, clubs, restaurants and public places are quite happy to allow customers and workers to vape freely. Of course, this is solely at the owners’ discretion but many do see the benefits of vaping and are happy to encourage it. Establishments have even been created where vaping is the main activity and vaping bars look set to be a thing of the future. Many vaping bars are already in existence and California in particular has a huge vaping scene which looks set to spread should the e-cigarette remain unregulated.

The key word above is ‘unregulated’. E-cigarettes are currently available to buy just about anywhere; from the corner shop to online stores but some non-smokers have expressed concern over the chemicals present in the vapour. Despite this, many ex-smokers cite them as the most successful method for quitting smoking and they are still free from the carbon monoxide and other toxins which are present in regular cigarettes.

Many celebrities have also been caught with an e-cig in hand and they look set to become a thing of the future. Will vaping become the buzzword of 2014? Well, if ‘selfie’ can do it, anything is possible!
